What Dental Insurance Typically Covers

Most dental plans follow a 100/80/50 structure — preventive care is covered in full, basic work at 80%, and major procedures at 50% after your deductible.

100%

Preventive Care

Routine services that keep your teeth healthy and catch problems early — usually covered in full with no waiting period.

Exams · Cleanings · X-rays · Fluoride treatments · Sealants
80%

Basic Restorative

Treatment for common dental problems. Plans typically cover 80% after your annual deductible is met.

Fillings · Simple extractions · Periodontal treatment · Emergency exams
50%

Major Restorative

Larger procedures that restore structure and function. Usually covered at 50% with a waiting period of 6–12 months.

Crowns · Bridges · Dentures · Root canals · Oral surgery
💡
Orthodontia Coverage Available Many plans offer optional orthodontia riders covering braces and Invisalign for children and adults. Ask your advisor about adding orthodontia coverage to your plan.

Choosing the Right Dental Plan

There are two main types of dental insurance. Your advisor will help you find the one that fits your dentist, your needs, and your budget.

🏥

DPPO — Dental PPO

The most popular type. Use any licensed dentist, but save more when you stay in-network. No referrals needed for specialists.

Use any dentist
No referrals needed
Lower in-network costs
Higher premiums
Out-of-network costs more
📋

DHMO — Dental HMO

Lower premiums with a designated primary dentist. Great for cost-conscious individuals comfortable with a network dentist.

Lower monthly premium
Low or no deductible
Predictable copays
Must use network dentist
Referral required for specialists

🏢

Lost Employer Coverage

Changed jobs or went self-employed and lost your group dental benefits? Individual plans are easy to get and often surprisingly affordable.

👨‍👩‍👧

Have a Family

Kids need regular checkups, cleanings, and sealants. Family dental plans keep everyone covered without separate policies for each person.

⚠️

Have Upcoming Dental Work

Know you need a crown, bridge, or implant? Getting covered now — even with a waiting period — is far cheaper than paying out of pocket.

💰

Want to Protect Your Savings

Even healthy mouths can have surprise emergencies. Dental insurance caps your exposure so one visit doesn't become a $3,000 bill.

🌿

Value Preventive Care

If you get two cleanings a year at $150 each, your plan pays for itself before you ever file a claim on anything else.

👴

Early Retirees (Under 65)

Not yet on other benefits? Individual dental insurance fills the gap and keeps your oral health on track.

Dental Insurance Questions Answered

Preventive care typically has no waiting period and is covered from day one. Basic restorative services like fillings usually have a 3–6 month wait. Major work like crowns often has a 6–12 month waiting period. Some carriers offer no-waiting-period plans at a slightly higher premium.
With a PPO plan, yes — you can see any licensed dentist, though staying in-network saves you more. HMO plans require a network dentist. Your advisor will check whether your preferred dentist is in-network before you enroll.
Most individual dental plans have an annual maximum of $1,000–$2,000. Once you hit that limit, you pay 100% until the next benefit year. Higher annual maximum plans are available and worth considering if you anticipate significant dental work.
Standard dental plans generally do not cover implants, as most carriers classify them as cosmetic. However, some premium plans and specialized riders offer partial implant coverage. Ask your advisor to find plans with the best implant benefits if that's a priority.
Dental insurance pays a portion of your covered dental bills. A dental discount plan is a membership that gets you reduced rates at participating dentists — you still pay the discounted amount in full. Discount plans have no waiting periods or annual maximums, but provide less protection on large bills.
